How to prepare for the TOLES Higher examination

Paper 1 – Legal reading and writing

Before you start any preparation for the TOLES Higher examination, find out the format of the exam: how many exercises there are and what you are expected to do in each. Candidates may also find it useful to check the areas of law that they are tested on during the exam. These are all provided on the Boost your Legal English platform.

There are 6 (six) exercises called Sections. The time allowed for Paper 1 is 90 minutes.

Section 1

This is a typical multiple choice question where you need to choose one correct answer out of 4. There are unrelated 10 sentences with gaps where a missing word is part of a legal phrase. The phrases may come from a wide variety of legal areas and concepts. When preparing for this part make sure you know your phrases well and no synonym or close synonym can distract or confuse you.

Section 2

This is a standard open cloze exercise. There are 10 gaps in a text where you can only provide one word in each space. The text may describe real-life cases or concepts from a variety of legal areas. The missing word mostly forms part of a legal phrase. At times the phrases may be closer to business or general English.

Section 3 (A)

There is a contractual provision in which there are five words missing. You need to choose the correct word from the five given in the list. Each word may be used only once. This task checks your understanding of the contractual phrases and their proper form.

Section 3 (B)

There is a contractual provision in which there are five prepositions missing. You need to choose the correct one from the five given in the list. Each preposition may be used only once. This task checks your understanding of the contractual phrases and their proper form.

On the Legal English Boost platform there are exercises called Collocations, especially in the Contract law unit, as well as Prepositions where you can practise the proper legal combinations.

Section 4

There is an example of a letter written by a lawyer to another colleague or a client. There are 10 (ten) underlined phrases which require redrafting. You need to suggest a better alternative to use a proper formal style and a legal phrase suitable in this context. Additionally, your suggestion needs to be grammatically correct.

On the Legal English Boost platform there are exercises called Formal style practice which show you possible formal and legal alternatives to simpler phrases.

Section 5

This is a standard multiple choice exercise. There are 10 (ten) sentences with one missing preposition in each. You need to choose one option out of the four given. These sentences check your knowledge of business, financial and legal prepositional phrases.

On the Legal English Boost platform there are exercises called Prepositions where you can test your knowledge and prepare better for this exam Section.

Section 6

There is a contractual provision in which 5 (five) phrases have been underlined. You need to explain the meaning and define each briefly in the context provided. This task checks your understanding of the contractual phrases and ability to explain them using simple English.

On the Legal English Boost platform there are exercises called Informal style practice which show you examples of the possible definitions on flashcards.

Paper 2 Listening

There are three exercises called Sections in this part. The time allowed for this Part is about 40-45 minutes. You listen to each section twice.

Section 1

You may listen to a conversation between a lawyer and a client, or a professor of law speaking to law students. There are 10 questions which you need to answer with a few words or a full sentence.

Section 2

You can hear part of a lecture or talk given at a seminar or a meeting. At the same time you follow the tapescript where there are ten words missing. Your task is to write down the proper spelling of each word.

Section 3

You listen to a conversation between two lawyers or a lawyer and a client. There are 10 statements about the listening. You need to decide whether they are True or False.
